I attended this conference last year and it was a tremendous help. The speakers and workshops were simply overflowing with useful information. I learned so much in just a short time. The pracitcal advice was so helpful, plus the vendors were great and carried the things I needed. Whether you have questions or you just need to connect with other parents of special needs children, you don't want to miss the inspiring and encouraging opportunity. It is very well organized and worth the drive. Stay tuned for details for 2010

I also have a special interest in assisting parents with educating their struggling learners at home. I have a degree in special education (with a foucs on emotional difficulties) and have faced learning challenges in my own home, so I have been motivated to search out resources and methods to streamline our efforts. We are developing services and selecting new products that will support and encourage you in this noble task. We will keep you posted. Feel free to call us with ideas or suggestions.
We believe that all parents home educate their children to some degree. Homeschoolers do so full time, while other parents do so part time by helping with homework and teaching life skills. It is a challenge for all parents to manage the often highly demanding needs of their special needs children. Some needs are physical, while others are emotional. Some children need to be pushed into activity and interaction, while others need to slow down and focus. The good news is that there are answers. There is hope my friends.
We plan to host some free workshops for parents of special students. Check back or feel free to email us and ask to be on our mailing list.
Spring of 2010: Assessments
1. Brigance Testing and Home Education Plans.
2. IOWA ~ Special Needs Accomodations
3. Informal Assessment
~ 30-40 minutes per child using games and simple tests
~ determine specific learning difficulties and learning styles
~ save hundreds of dollars on formal testing.
Note: Many parents want to have their children tested, but the cost is far outside their budget at $600-$1000 for private testing. Even though you can appeal for testing in your local school district, there can often be a long wait. Informal testing can be highly accurate and offer affordable, practical solutions to choosing the best resources for your child.
Formal testing is valuable. It gives you the peace of mind that there is standardized evidence to back up what you already know. It is also valuable documentation in receiving services, especially from public institutions, ex.: speech services, specal ed placement upon returning to public or private schools, or accomodations on the college level. However, it is not necessary to have formal testing in order design an Home Ed Plan.
*If you desire formal testing, there is a local educational psychologist who comes highly recommended. She is homeschool friendly and has a wonderful rapport with the students. I think that makes all the difference. A relaxed student will perform better. She will also provide general recommendations. Currenly, she only takes students on a limited basis, but I will be happy to make a recommendation.
